How I actually keep an eye on Ice, our Alaskan Malamute, when we’re out
Why This Setup Matters
If you just want to know whether your pet is home, any cheap camera will do.
If you want to know:
- whether they’re calm or stressed
- if they’re pacing by the door
- whether they’re asleep, howling, or chewing something they shouldn’t
- and you want that in a way that actually works without babysitting the app
…then Home Assistant is where things get useful.
That’s the difference between a generic camera and a monitoring system.
My Actual Setup
I run:

What Actually Works
1. Use wired cameras if you can
WiFi is fine until it isn’t.
For pet monitoring, the worst failure mode is missing something because a camera dropped offline. PoE solves that.
2. Put cameras where they can see the whole room
One camera with 180° coverage is often better than two cheaper cameras with blind spots.
3. Use automations for meaningful alerts
Motion alerts alone are noise. Better alerts are things like:
- “Ice is pacing near the kitchen door”
- “Ice is howling in the hallway”
- “Ice is resting on the rug”
That’s what makes it worth using.
Home Assistant Automations I’d Build First
If I were starting again, these are the automations I’d do first:
Pet activity alert
Trigger when the camera detects motion plus a person/pet event, then send a notification.
Calm check
If Ice is moving a lot for 10 minutes, send a “might need a check-in” alert.
Quiet time snapshot
At certain times, snapshot the room and save it to the dashboard for later reference.
Leaving home mode
When we leave, switch cameras into an active monitoring mode and raise alert sensitivity.
Why AI Helps
The old way is “motion detected”.
The better way is:
- what is moving
- where it is
- whether it looks normal
- whether you need to care
AI isn’t magic, but it’s excellent for turning noisy camera feeds into useful summaries.
That means fewer false positives and more useful alerts.
Best Practices
- Keep cameras on Ethernet if possible
- Use local recording, not only cloud storage
- Add a dedicated pet-monitoring dashboard in Home Assistant
- Keep the setup simple enough that you’ll actually use it
- Prefer one or two strong cameras over lots of cheap ones

No, but it makes the setup much better. You can do basic monitoring without it, but Home Assistant gives you automations, dashboards, and smarter alerts.
